Alternatives in Assessment
Not all assessment has to be in a form of a formal test or quiz, assessment is continually occurring in the classroom to evaluate performance on a topic. More educators are looking at alternatives to testing students to gain a holistic view of students. With alternative assessment the students get to choose and respond, focussing on strengths rather than emphasizing weaknesses of the student.
A collection of work chosen by the student to demonstrate growth and achievements. They can include all aspects of the students learning, and provide a sense of accomplishment.
A written response to a particular topic. They can take place in many forms, reflections, responses, self-assessments, learning log, which help to further critical thinking (Brown & Lee, 2015). Students need to be given criteria to follow and a rubric to provide clear expectations of the journals.
A dialogue between Educators and students, which the educator is simply a guide creating dialogue between both parties.
Observing students as they go about completing classroom tasks. This is the best time to silently observe in the back ground to gain knowledge and understanding of ones students.
Self-assessment provides the student with self reflection ad forces them to look deeply at themselves. SelfIt forces them to engage in deliberate thought about how and what they are learning. It is also thought to create independent learners and increase motivation. Peer-Assessment works well in a supportive environment providing constructive washback to their peers.
